Catholic Woman's League

The CWL is a national body with branches in all dioceses, the aims of which are to encourage women to enhance their spiritual lives and to be involved in the work of the church and to serve the community in social, civic or moral issues.

The St Michael's CWL meets every third Monday of the month in the Ruffell Room at 18:30, and anyone is welcome to attend.

The objects of the League are:

To unite Catholic women in their service for God, the Church, the Family and the country, under the direction of the hierarchy;
To assist the parish work under the guidance of the parish priest (this clause shall apply to Parish Committees only);
To take an active part in national and civic enterprises, and to affiliate with approved bodies for this purpose;
To consolidate Catholic action among Catholic women in defence of Catholic principles;
To encourage the formation of a strong and enlightened Catholic opinion and the diffusion of Catholic principles;
To foster inter-racial understanding and co-operation;
To promote a spirit of fellowship among Catholic women to provide isolated Catholics with a knowledge of Catholic opinion and movements:
While being strictly non-party political, the National and Diocesan Councils shall have the power to take action in defence of the Church, the family and the country - with the approval of the competent ecclesiastical authority;
To engage in social welfare activities, such as care of the aged, family welfare, child adoption, day care services, youth programmes and community work;
To establish, conduct and maintain sub-economic homes in respect of the previous point.
To acquire funds in respect of the above-mentioned point.

We do not have adoption agencies in the Cape Town archdiocese, but both Johannesburg and Pretoria are involved in these as well as in homes for the aged.

As an international organisation, women from all over the world meet once every five years to discuss international issues. These assemblies are held in different countries. We, in South Africa, are affiliated to the African organisations and this year (2018) are meeting in Senegal for discussions about African issues.

We also have a National Conference every three years and the next will be held in Johannesburg in 2020. The National Management team rotates every three years and was last in Cape Town from 2005 to 2008.

Our work is twofold: assisting in the parish while raising funds for charity. All our revenue from monthly craft markets, funeral teas and donations are distributed amongst our chosen charities. These include St Anthony’s Preschool in Langa, Peninsula School Feeding, the Haven Night Shelter, Nazareth House (both in Elsies River and Vredehoek), SA Guide Dogs, Goedgedacht, St Vincent de Paul, Mater Domini, Holy Cross Orphanage in Parow, Salesians, Nerina Old Age Home and Rape Crisis. We also contribute to the Suburban Clothing Guild - each member donates new garments and these are distributed once a year.

The CWL helps our spiritual growth and deepens our faith. At our monthly meetings, in addition to our league prayers, we are blessed with spiritual input from our Spiritual Director, Rev Tony Van Vuuren. We also hold an annual Day of Recollection at Schoenstatt, and attend the Women's World Day of Prayer.

To raise funds, we hold a Mothers’ Day Cake Sale and a Quiz Evening, which has proved to be very popular!

The CWL is always happy to receive donations of suitable items for its monthly white elephant stall at the Morning Market. Please contact the parish office 021-686-8708 if you can help. Part of our service to the parish is to serve tea at funerals and also for special events such as First Communion.
