St Michael’s is renowned for its music with a rich tradition going back many years.

The St Michael’s Choir (9am mass) is led by choir master and organist, Johann Swanepoel and sings traditional and classical, sacred music. It is one of the few choirs in Cape Town that sings the rich heritage of Catholic liturgical and sacred music.  The choir has a large repertoire of motets and mass settings, most of which are sung in four-part harmony.

The Genesis Band and Choir (Sun 6pm) sings contemporary gospel music and comprises a large team of singers and musicians, including drums, guitars, keys and synth, plus a talented team of brass, strings, woodwind and percussion musicians.

Kids

Our Genesis Kid’s programme runs on Sundays for the first half of the 9am mass and is for children from ages 1– 7.  There are two separate classes. The class for 1-3 year olds is held in the Gill Room (to the left of the courtyard) and the class for 4-7 year olds is held in the Kelly Room (to the right of the courtyard). Please access these classrooms via the entrance to the Parish Centre on the left of the church. The classes begin at 9am on Sundays and your children will return to the church at the offertory. Please feel free to join your child in the classroom.

Catechism classes take place during the week.  Grades 1 –5 follow the unique Good Shepherd programme and the Grades 6 and 7 classes are facilitated by our youth co-ordinator and team.

Teens

Life Teen is run every Sunday during the school year for High School learners. It is led by our youth co-ordinator and a core team of 8 –15 young adults. This exceptional programme brings all high school grades together for inspiring Life Nights on Sunday evenings.  Life Teen is relational and Christ-centered, and aims to lead teens closer to Christ through building community; sharing input; encouraging small group discussion and providing opportunities for prayer.

Life Teen starts in the hall after the 6pm mass on Sundays, and lasts until 8:45pm. New teens are welcome to come for a week to get a feel for it. Parents are invited to make contact with Lauren Sanby (Life Teen facilitator) so we know to expect them, although they are also welcome to just walk in.

Young Adults

Genesis is our vibrant young adults’ programme (post school to 30) and was designed to provide the young adults with a platform where they can experience and express their faith with their peers and within the greater parish community.

Genesis was started in 2003, and is led by a team of young adults. It is event driven and has four key pillars and three support pillars, each providing a series of events aimed at bringing young adults to a real and deeper encounter with Christ.

The programme has four main pillars (Spirituality, Service, Knowledge & Friendship) and three support pillars (Music, Marketing & Finance) with a pillar leader and sub-committee for each. Through the service pillar, our young adults are doing some exceptional outreach into the community.

To get involved, contact Joe, our Genesis leader or one of the pillar leaders. You can also join us at one of the events which are publicised at mass and in the weekly digital newsletter or follow us on social media.
